Shillong, the Scotland of the east, is a charming hill station and tourist favourite. Expectedly there are some touristy spots that every visitor is urged to visit, as if to tick off on a checklist.
But, this beautiful place is much more than a few must-see sights. It is a tapestry of clouds playing hide and seek with the blue sky, the sun intermingling with the rain, rolling meadows, lush green and laid-back vibe.
You needn't fill your days with "things to do". Just sit back and watch the clouds sailing past. Smell the woody scent of the pines. Breathe in the brisk, refreshing air. Let the breeze play with your hair. Just as you come out in the sunlit porch, feel the tip-tap of a light drizzle. The sky changes from blue to grey to white in minutes.
And when you have soaked in the atmosphere, you can check out a few destinations at your leisure.
Must-visit Places of Shillong
Ward's Lake - This pretty, winding lake set in an equally pretty park is ideal for a leisurely stroll, some moments of respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Just sit and daydream on the benches.
Shillong Golf Course - Miles of rolling green fields, surrounded by deodars and ferns, this place is an idler's delight.
You can literally roll in the grass, and stare at the sky.
Elephant Falls - When you really want to feel touristy, check out this splendid waterfall, 12 km away from the main city. But, you need to negotiate quite a few steps leading to the first, second and third level of the falls. So visit only if you are comfortable walking several steps up and down.
The spray from the waterfall and the drizzle make things quite slippery. But the hard work is worth it!
Umiam Lake - On the way from Shillong airport, you find Umiam Lake or "Barapani" as they refer to it locally.
The second largest lake in Asia, this place is a bird watcher's and nature lover's delight. Tall trees with lush foliage surround the vast lake.
I have omitted Shillong Peak from this list, as I found it overcrowded and full of selfie-clicking tourists. The view from the watch towers is good, but is mostly hidden by clouds and mist. The wooded patch nearby is however, very charming.
Avoid the crowds, disappear in the woods nearby.
Meg Tea Garden on the way to Shillong Peak is very pretty, but the approach road is dug up, awfully slushy and reaching there is a struggle.
Police Bazaar - Your go-to stalls for handicrafts, bags, bamboo relics, clothes, woolen wear etc.
Eat at Khasi and Naga food joints here. You get delicious street food here.
If you prefer and authentic Khasi meal in a fine dining atmosphere, check out The Tripura Heritage Club.
Walk around and explore. Discover Shillong for yourself. That's the fun!
