6 Healthy Daily Habits to Adopt Right Now!

Myra had just spent a bombshell on a wellness package for herself at a reputed spa. She had gone for the complete head to toe massage, rejuvenation and body polishing package. She felt like a million bucks looking into the mirror.

A week later, Myra feels sluggish and morose. Her post-spa glow is gone, and so is the feeling of vitality she had felt after taking the wellness program. She doesn't feel like getting out of bed, and binges on colas and cheese balls, while binge watching Netflix.

See the pattern? The wellness package did its job in recharging Myra and giving her a post-workout glow, but her lifestyle and eating habits let her down. Which means that unless our overall diet and lifestyle supports healthy ways of living, no wellness or fitness package will work in the long run.

Staying healthy and looking good need not cost the earth. Splurging on expensive cosmetics and applying chemically laden ointments are not the only ways to attain beauty. Some simple everyday habits and rituals can pave the way for a healthy, fit body and glowing looks. And also better mental health!

Don’t believe me? Try out these simple daily habits to look and feel better.

1. Get sufficient sleep:

Sleep is like manna for the human body. Our body recovers and rejuvenates during our sleep. Lack of sleep can play havoc with your constitution and your looks. Ensure that you get 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep at night to shine with good health and look your very best. (The term "beauty sleep is not overrated!)

2. Drink lots of water:

There is no substitute to this natural hydrating and cleansing agent. Not even the best skin care products can make you glow the way proper hydration does. Not only is water great for natural detoxification of our system, it is absolutely essential for your skin to stay hydrated from within. Drink up on this natural elixir given to us by nature.

3. Eat healthy:

This is a no-brainer. You are what you eat, as they say.

Add greens, fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Make sure your diet includes five to six helpings of fresh fruits, colourful vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, healthy fats and proteins like paneer/cottage cheese, fish, eggs, chicken. Coloured fruits and vegetables like guava, beetroot, tomato, broccoli, spinach have strong antioxidant properties, and protect your skin from within. Vitamin C, present in citrus fruits, guava, broccoli, cauliflower, is vital for your skin renewal process.

4. Get sunshine for at least half hour a day:

Sunshine helps your body produce Vitamin D that is so essential to strengthen immunity. Get your daily dose of sunshine during the early morning hours when the sun’s rays are not harsh. Vitamin D helps your body retain calcium that is so essential for strong bones and teeth. Sunlight also helps in tackling mental health issues like depression, worrying, anxiety and stress.

5. Meditation, positive visualization, deep breathing calm your mind:

Stress is poison for your body and mind. It is a silent killer that leads to several other diseases like hypertension, blood sugar, blood pressure, depression, anxiety, digestive problems etc. Deep breathing techniques calm your mind and help in relieving stress. Meditation and Mindfulness help focus your mind and prioritize goals.

6. Exercise in moderation:

Get twenty minutes of moderate physical exercise every day, so that your body can remain in good shape. Exercise leads to your body producing endorphins, and serotonin that ensure you feel good and your emotions are in balance. Negative thoughts and stress can be kept away with regular exercise. If you find it difficult to do strenuous exercise, at least walk or stroll for half an hour a day. Don't overdo working out, however. Too much exercise can give you joint pain and torn ligaments.

Try out these simple modifications in your lifestyle and diet, and observe the positive change in your health. And yes,

Remember to Keep Smiling!

Enough! No more rape!

The recent horrifying, stomach-churning incident in Kolkata is not a one-time aberration. It keeps occuring in our country. And we women are also responsible for this stinking rot in society. Ask yourself these uncomfortable questions. How many of you protest when a girl wearing "revealing clothes" is cat-called?  Did you show your support for our wrestlers protesting against a habitual offender? Did your blood boil when you saw pictures of our sisters in Manipur paraded naked?  When rapists are released from prison or routinely escape punishment, do you raise your voice? How many of you have tolerated violence or even casual sexism in your own home? Do you turn the other way when transgenders are leered at? Do you grin and bear it when the men in your family crack obscene jokes? Do Kathua and Hathras ring a bell? And lastly, how many of you thronged cinema halls to make misogynistic horrors like Animal and Kabir Singh blockbusters? I have asked myself and am distinctly feeli...

All We Imagine as Light- Lyricism on Celluloid

When an Indian film makes it the prestigious Cannes film festival, the world sits up and takes notice! And the lovely ladies swinging on the stage is a recent memory that brings a sense of pride. I had the good fortune to catch this film on screen recently. A review of such work is unnecessary, but still am bursting to say a few words. Right from the scintillating background score, to the events that unfold like pages fluttering in an open book, to the effortless performances, it's a masterpiece all right! The first half romances Mumbai- in the rains, at night, in the bazaars, in dingy rooms, in the local trains. Image source: Wikipedia  The second half shows what light truly is, brilliant sunshine, crashing waves and salty air in a small coastal village in Maharashtra. You can feel the taste of salt, the breeze in your hair and the touch of sand under your feet, the cinematography is so real. Payal Kapadia masters the art of holding back, of showing beauty in the mundane. The hosp...

Laapataa Ladies - the Unfortunate Story of Lost Women

Laapataa Ladies is a deceptively simple, yet extremely thought-provoking satire couched in a simple story of exchanged brides. Image Source: IMdB This is the unfortunate story of countless ordinary women living under the veil, in the shadow of uncaring men. Who can't remember any details of their husband or the sasural they are married into. Who are trained only to obey their husband, do their duty in the kitchen, and follow orders of in-laws. Who don't have the liberty to study or do something for their own betterment. What can we expect for such women, except a lifetime of slavery? If the husband happens to be good, then there's some ray of hope. If he's a rascal, then God save her. Thanks to Kiran Rao for addressing the woes of 80% of Indian women living in nameless villages. And thanks for calling out the "greatest fraud" - the fraud of getting ready for marriage and domesticity. Where you can make the perfect kalakand, but you can't find your way...
