Sounds familiar?

The bane of most people in winter, and for some unfortunate ones throughout the year - Frizzy Hair can literally cause you "bad hair days" followed by sleepless nights!

And now that the dry cold season is here, the problem actually gets worse.

The good news is that you can  tame this "hair-raising" problem!

Let's find out what causes frizzy hair, and what aggravates it. Let's also look into managing frizzy hair in winter, with some simple home remedies and lifestyle modifications that won’t break the bank!

What is Dry/Frizzy Hair?

Frizzy or excessively dry hair is hair that is lacking in natural moisture and sheen. According to https://www.healthline.com/  “Dry hair develops when your hair doesn’t get or retain enough moisture. This reduces its sheen and can make it appear frizzy and dull.”

Our hair is protected by an outer layer that reflects light and maintains natural oils. However, if the outer layer is damaged or breaks down, then hair appears frizzy and dull. This can happen due to many natural and chemical reasons that we will discuss in the next section.

Causes of Frizzy Hair

Dry hair is a type where your hair lacks moisture and looks unruly. But did you know sometimes dry, frizzy, hair can worsen simply because of extreme temperatures or  bad hygiene habits?

Frizzy hair gets worse due to:

  • Extreme, dry climatic conditions, lack of humidity in the air
  • Spending excessive time outdoors in the sun and wind
  • Swimming in chlorine-filled swimming pools

Faulty hair care habits like the following can lead to dull, frizzy hair:

  • Winter comes, and we turn on the geyser. But washing your hair in hot water, removes whatever moisture and oils are there. Your hair becomes brittle.
  • That lovely hairdo demands a load of chemical laden sprays/gels/colouring agents. But these damage hair if used wrongly or too often.
  • Got your hair straightened? Heat-based hair styling treatments cause your hair to become brittle. You need to nourish it with oils and serums.
  • Blow drying hair frequently, or from too close also makes it drier.
  • Medical conditions like dandruff, malnutrition or anaemia, thyroid, menopause,  psoriasis, aggravate dryness and frizziness. Caution: If you have medical conditions like thyroid, eating disorders, lack of calcium in the body etc., get an appointment with your doctor for the treating that first. Don't try any remedy without tackling the underlying medical causes first.
If it's winter dryness that's worsening your hair quality and making it look like a bird's nest, read on to know how to tackle it.

6 Easy Home-based Treatment for Dry Hair

Your kitchen and garden have plenty of natural hair taming stuff that won't create magic overnight, but with continuous use, help keep your frizzy hair in control.

Try any of these:

  • Coconut Oil, Onion Seed Oil, Olive Oil or Mustard Oil - warm these a little and apply for at least an hour before washing off with a mild shampoo
  • Argan Oil can be used before styling your hair so that damage is minimized.  Always use a serum or oil before using heat or irons on hair. Try to dry hair naturally without using hair dryer, and even if you use keep it away from scalp and use on warm mode.
  • Avocado is rich in Vitamins E and A, and helps hydrate your hair. Mash half an avocado and apply. Then wash off with mild shampoo.
  • Yoghurt is a rich hydrating product that can do wonders to restore moisture. Mix two tablespoons yoghurt with olive or coconut oil, and apply. Wash off half an hour later.
  • Ripe bananas have excellent moisture restoring properties. Mash an overripe banana, mix with a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and apply. Wash off thoroughly an hour later with a natural shampoo.
  • Fenugreek seeds are extremely rich in folic acid, Vitamin A, K & C that help treat dryness and thinning, while intensely hydrating your hair and strengthening the roots. Soak overnight, boil in a little water, strain the water and mix with oil and apply.

Av.    Use a mild shampoo that has gentle natural ingredients like olive oil, aloe vera, avocado, papaya etc. Avoid ingredients like reetha and henna as they dry the hair further.

F.   Frizzy hair must always, repeat always, be conditioned after washing, so that moisture loss can be minimized. Use a fruit oil based conditioner.

Natural oils and fruit extracts can help in making dry, dull hair smoother and easy to manage.

So, to sum up, keep these in mind:

  • Never use hot water to wash your hair. Tepid or lukewarm water is okay, but cold water is best.
  • Shampoo your hair only once or twice a week, after oiling properly. If oiling isn't your thing  apply a cream-based conditioner after washing.
  • Protect hair from dry air or harsh sunlight. Wear a scarf.
  • Avoid heat-based styling products or hair dryer too frequently
Wish you manageable hair this winter! Protect yourself from bad hair days!
